Kina Density & Kelp Canopy Surveying

THIS EVENT IS FULLY BOOKED.
The Te Kohuroa Rewilding team will be in the water with an incredible bunch of wāhine who work in science, conservation and in-water education to assess the correlation between kina population densities and kelp coverage within our kelp restoration and control sites.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17th

This evening workshop is the prerequisite session to the Fish Surveying Training taking place on Saturday 19th October (event details below). This session teaches you how to identify a wide variety of fish and other aquatic residents at Te Kohuroa Matheson Bay so you can carry out fish counts, helping us assess the biodiversity within our rocky reefs and kelp forests.

EQUIPMENT: Snorkel gear and surveying tools provided. bring your togs, some lunch and a drink.

Advanced Snorkel & Fish Survey Training

Join us as we dive into the ocean and learn advanced snorkel skills (such as duck-diving and equalisation) in preparation for our community kina harvest days.

Once you have mastered advanced snorkelling, we will then go out onto the rocky reefs and carry out a series of ‘Timed Fish Counts’ to assess the biodiversity on the reef.

Goat Island Marine Reserve Fundraising Swim

Te Kohuroa Rewilding is raising funds for project equipment to help us complete our Pilot Program.

We are delighted to be partnering with Yogifish.nz - who creates ocean swim adventures for salty souls - to bring you a fundraising Safari Swim around the iconic Island at Te Hāwere-a-Maki / Goat Island Marine reserve to support our kaupapa.

The swim is one lap of Goat Island which is approximately 2kms and is suitable for confident ocean swimmers who can freestyle 1.5kms in open ocean. All swimmers must be pre-registered to swim. Click through below to read the event details and register.

GPS Drop Camera Mapping

The Te Kohuroa Team will be out and about at the beginning of November to continue their photographic drop camera imagery to assist with the assessment of the reef and mark the kelp restoration zones.

Community Kina Harvest & Guided Snorkel

To kickstart our Kelp Restoration Process we are bringing our community together to hand gather kina via snorkel, which will be shared as kai moana with participants and the community.

The day starts with an information session about our kelp restoration process, the importance of kina and the causes of kina barrens. Then participants will be guided out to the restoration sites to harvest the kina (1hr).

Those who don’t want to snorkel can join our Citizen Science Station as we measure and count the kina removed. There will also be guided walks through the wetlands and freshwater space, plus a fun afternoon guided snorkel to meet the rocky reef and kelp forest residents of Te Kohuroa Matheson Bay.

Session 1: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 25th

‘SHMAK’ Stream Assessment Training (1)

TKRI and Wai Connection are inviting individuals and groups in the Leigh to Whangateau area to learn more about water quality and stream biodiversity indicators, through our 2-day Stream Health Assessment and Monitoring Kit (SHMAK) training.

SHMAK is an engaging, hands-on process that will show our community how to assess the ongoing health of Te Kohuroa awa. This vital information will contribute to a long-term dataset which will be used to support the protection of our freshwater and marine environment into the future.

The first training day is on November 25th and the follow up training day is December 5th. Participants must be available for both days to qualify for registration. ‘SHMAK’ Stream Assessment Training (2)

This is the second event of a two day water quality and stream biodiversity indicators training process for Stream Health Assessment and Monitoring Kit (SHMAK) training.

Both days include hands-on training to help participants understand the current and ongoing ecological health of Te Kohuroa awa (other local streams) and how to collect ongoing data.
